Meet Timo: When Insurance Changes, the Math Changes

We met Mona Brewer in November of 2024 at a Diabetes You Can Win walk, held each year. The organization's president had invited us to have a booth at the event.

Mona came to our table and told us about her daughter, Ta'Leea, who had died of DKA earlier that year. Ta'Leea was a delayed onset type 1 diabetic. So is her twin brother, Timo.

We kept in touch with Timo after the event and offered support, but none was needed at the time. He works as a medical tech and had good insurance that covered most of his copays.

Then, in 2026, he had a crisis.

His employer changed insurance carriers, and Timo chose a plan without fully understanding the difference between the monthly premium and the deductible. The monthly payment was affordable. The copayments were not. His out of pocket cost for supplies came to $800 for two or three months.

He reached out to us, and we covered all of his copays until his deductible was met. For the rest of the year, his supplies are covered.
